I came to legacy writing through my training as a doula for the dying, and learned that the work of exploring our values and stories is for everyone, whether actively dying or not. In writing my stories, I place myself into the context of my lineage and invite my loved ones to remember my as I am beyond my “vital statistics”. I become known to my family and friends, and more importantly, to myself. In writing, I make connections to the past and links to the future that didn’t exist for me before I sat down, pen to paper. My writing is a remembrance of my family and myself for my children, my community and all who will come after me. By writing my values and beliefs, I come to understand them more fully. I share them as blessings and wishes for success that will take root and flower in the lives of others.
